Social Media's Impact on Youth
Social media has joined our society today in such a way that if you are not in any social media platform, it is impossible for people to take you seriously.
Everyone is on social media- young, old, rich, poor etc. Everyone is always in a frenzy when it comes to online social work. Even the corporate world has jumped into the bandwagon and companies are active online, updating posts and answering questions.
There are many social networks to choose from; Some of the popular ones include Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram. As the popularity of social media has spread across the world, these networks have had mixed feelings about how they affect youth. So, how does social media affect youth?
To answer this question, we have to look at both the positive and negative effects of social media on youth. Going along with the first, social media has transformed the world into a global village. Young people can interact with people from other parts of the earth with just a click of a button.
Through these conversations, youth can share ideas, get information and also explore many opportunities. Second, social media provides them with an opportunity to make new friends and allows them to retain their old friends.
With social media, they can see their former friends simply by typing their name or simply indicting the school they attended. Then, the network would do all the work and link all the people with whom they went to school.
Apart from just socialization, social networks have become a front line for the corporate world to advertise their goods and services. They can either do it directly or pay celebrities to advertise their product. Therefore, social media provides a range of opportunities for the youth. Popular youth can be hired by corporations online to be their brand ambassadors.
In addition, they can make a lot of money by running podcasts and blogs. Social media is also an avenue that they can use to showcase their talent. Youth can run a business through social media. They can share the goods and services they provide to friends and groups and for wider coverage, they can sponsor their posts to reach the most people.
It is also an avenue where people can express their honest opinions. People who are naturally shy can say anything without fear of serious repercussions on these public forums.
It is also a cheap means of communication. Only internet bandwidth and some keystrokes are required and users can communicate with almost anyone on Earth. Social media has made it possible for people to work from anywhere on earth. This is known as virtual teaming. Although hires are carried out in a single organization, these virtual work groups operate from different parts of the earth. However, they are communicated online.
In another aspect of the coin, the Internet is an unregulated world in which there is no form of morality or law to follow. The youth have been exposed to video footage of murder victims, accidents, rape cases or even gun shootings, violence, verbal explosions, nudity and explicit sexual content. All of these terrible content are in the domain of youth and when they stay with them for a long time can cause a serious mental breakdown.
For example, they start having real world attacks and fears. Everything they see is registered in their minds and they believe that the world is a bad place, but it is not completely true. Over 90% of the Earth is a safe haven with so many unexpected opportunities.
Too much social media also causes addiction. Society today is full of people sitting next to each other, but talking is not happening to anyone, only moving from one phone to another.
The youth are spending more time with their social media friends, than with their families and loved ones. When they wake up, the first thing they do is check their social media account. The last thing they do is check the update, before going to sleep.
At work, productivity decreases as people engage in working hours via social media pages. With too many distractions, they cannot fully focus on their tasks. If social media is turned off for a day, the effect will start to show. Like drug addicts, they will be reclusive and overly tired.
It also leads to uncontrolled passion. People suffer from likes and comments and they will do anything to get them every day. Whatever they do, they post them on social media, so that some approval from strangers can be obtained.
Some people adopt fake personalities to show the world that they have made it. They do things to impress people that they would never dare to do in real life.
They work tirelessly only to buy the latest stuff to show up, eat expensive food and go to foreign places. Since they cannot receive love in their real life, similar to social media, they devote their lives completely to the social network. However, everything falls apart when their popularity runs out and they may fall into serious psychological problems like depression.
These social platforms are risky and dangerous and can be off-limits to crime. When we talk about social media the first crime is cyber-bullying. In social media, most people fake both their personalities and personal information. Then there are people who are really into social media.
Most of the time, fake people threaten and humiliate real people. While many may argue that it is not serious and the youth are just joking. The truth of the matter is that some people are affected, especially when their appearance revolves around a situation like insult, insecurity on religion or social status.
In addition, it is quite easy for anyone to find out using their social media information, such as location, school, and place of work. So, if a criminal wants to target someone, he will first look for information in one place and that is social media.
Social platforms also pose serious health hazards for users. Sitting on the PC for a long time can cause eye problems. In addition, active users maintain inactivity and lack of movement in their lives. They are therefore likely to suffer from obesity and are constantly at risk from obesity-related diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and stroke. In addition, they become socially disabled. They cannot initiate a conversation or interact with people.
Finally, social media snaps sympathy from its users. We see people in trouble, but instead of helping attendees, they record and post the footage on social media. This post is expected to like and comment, while Field Day is celebrated by others who make fun of the recorded person.
There are instances where people declare challenges. It can be illness or about losing a loved one or a broken relationship. We see people posting their condolences or condolences to make these posts feel good. The reality of the matter is that they do not feel remorse of any kind.
The creators of these networks did not anticipate that their creations would be centers of crime and social decay. Distancing from social media may not be practical or beneficial for society.
Social media marketing is unstable
In the early days of social marketing, there was little competition for dollars not today. For example, you can spend thousands of dollars on a Facebook advertising campaign and sometimes, no return on your investment.
By its nature, social media is a small attention-grabbing media it is very difficult to get someone's attention with a tweet, so one needs to get attention with a newspaper advertisement. This is because ad headlines and copy are difficult to write on Twitter or Instagram.
